Will more FUN at work improve employee engagement? Mel Kleiman, Founder and President of Humetrics, would say a resounding YES! On our recent webinar on Employee Engagement Best Practices, Mel, along with Mark Wilson and Ray Aley (our other panelists), highlighted having fun as one of the best practices for employee engagement.
Other key practices to successful employee engagement include open/consistent communication, employee recognition, team camaraderie, and authenticity.
Our panelists spoke a great deal about recognizing employees for their good work. Ray, a franchise owner, emphasized the importance of immediate and public recognition of his hourly workers at his Dunkin’ Donuts and KFC locations. In addition to recognition being immediate and public, Mel added that recognition should be customized to each employee. To this end, he offered the Employee Data Sheet, a template he created and shares with his clients. The Employee Data Sheet collects data such as favorite food, favorite radio station, etc. on each employee. This data is then used to personalize rewards for good work, either for an individual or team. Mel shared this template with registrants and attendees of the webinar.
Aside from discussing best practices, the webinar touched on challenges to creating an employee engagement program. A main challenge that HRTM members struggle with is getting leadership buy-in. Mark Wilson, Corporate Head of HR at United Dairy Farmers, spoke about how he uses data to tie engagement to financial metrics that management would care about. For example, looking at metrics from before and after the implementation of certain programs in comparison to the revenue within that same time frame. Being able to show management the impact of engagement on the bottom line allowed Mark to expand engagement efforts at his organization, with the support of leadership.
The Employee Engagement Best Practices webinar was our first Connect & Learn Series webinar for the HRTM community. At HRTM, our mission is to be a peer-to-peer community focused on connecting members to knowledge and experts on the journey to elevate the field of people management. We appreciate the participation of our members, and we hope you join us in the next Connect & Learn webinar!
